To say this school is progressive is an understatement. Lake Mills Elementary School was designed around both student needs and teacher approaches to learning. Understanding that learning happens everywhere, each space in the building is addressed as an opportunity for education and active saturation of material. Natural light floods the hallways and classrooms, with a wall of windows bringing energy and a connection to nature even in the school cafeteria; a living garden thriving on the roof.
“In this transformative school, learning is no longer restricted to the classroom, it happens throughout the building. EUA strategically created small group educational opportunities in circulation paths and under stairwells with flexible and built-in furniture. Throughout the media center you find cubbies and fun furniture where children can play, read, socialize and relax.”
Students take pride in their learning space understanding this school was built for them, and a feeling of belonging and significance permeates throughout student consciousness. The educational space is perfectly suited for each individual student’s learning style, and the physical attributes – such as the furniture – compliment the cerebral thought behind the design application. KI’s Intellect Wave and Tea Cup Lounge Seating can be seen paying tribute to the increased engagement of learning as students have freedom to move during “brain breaks” creating an environment ideal to explore whatever they are currently discussing in the classroom.
