When creating a learning space for students, we love to brainstorm ways to help them achieve their ultimate success with rooms that fit their individual academic needs. While we pour over research regarding the benefits of natural light, we wonder how we can incorporate this data as a functioning design element in a classroom?
"Studies show that poor or inappropriate lighting in schools can adversely affect children’s health and their ability to learn. Sunlight is the most important source of light and energy for humans. Its benefits can be gained through direct exposure outdoors, or skylights in buildings. People spend over 90% of their time indoors. Children spend up to 40 hours per week in school buildings, especially when they participate in after-school activities. Much of this time is spent under artificial lighting," (Source: Healthy Schools Network: Daylighting).
So what does the evidence show when introducing natural light into classrooms?
"Students demonstrated better work habits, improved academic performance, resistance to fatigue, and more positive attitudes • Studies also reported that schools had greater energy efficiency, significant cost savings and reduced environmental impact," (Source).
A local New Jersey High School wanted to implement the positive effects of natural light in their learning space that was not only flexible, but allowed natural light from the exterior windows to further penetrate the core of the room to maximize the benefits. Although the school had a tight budget, our team was able to come up with a solution using our least expensive glass wall solution, KI Furniture's Genius Walls, and incorporated glass in the panels and doors.
Additionally, flexible and movable furniture was chosen to keep the space lively. KI Furniture's Strive Nesting Chair and Pirouette Nesting Tables allows for an array of options for students and teachers, keeping the room adaptable.
As a result, the students now have a dynamic learning space that can easily change depending on their individual needs, along with reaping the benefits of the natural light flooding the room:
